Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about container homes, modular construction, delivery, pricing, and more.

General Questions

What is a container home?

A container home is a dwelling built from recycled or new shipping containers. These containers, made of Corten steel, are cut, assembled, and fitted out to create a comfortable and personalized living space. Kembelt transforms standard shipping containers into modern, eco-friendly homes that are durable, energy-efficient, and customizable to your needs.

How long does it take to build a container home?

The construction time for a container home is significantly faster than traditional construction. Typically, a standard container home can be completed in 3-4 months from design approval to final installation. This includes manufacturing (70% of the work done in our factory), delivery, and on-site assembly. Traditional construction would take 12-18 months for a comparable project.

How durable are container homes?

Container homes are extremely durable. Built from Corten steel (3-4mm thick), they can withstand extreme weather conditions including hurricanes (250km/h), earthquakes (8/10), heavy snow loads (2m), and saltwater corrosion. With proper maintenance, a container home can last 50-100 years, significantly longer than traditional wood-frame construction.

Can I customize my container home?

Absolutely! Kembelt offers extensive customization options. You can choose from various sizes (20ft, 40ft, 40HC), multiple containers stacked or side-by-side, interior layouts, finishes, windows, doors, insulation levels, electrical configurations, plumbing, and even smart home features. Our team works with you to create a home that perfectly matches your vision and needs.

Pricing Questions

How much does a container home cost?

Container home prices vary based on size, complexity, and finishes. A basic 20ft container studio starts from €15,000 - €25,000. A standard 3-bedroom family home (3-4 containers) ranges from €60,000 - €120,000. Luxury custom homes can exceed €150,000. Contact us for a personalized quote based on your specific requirements.

Are container homes cheaper than traditional houses?

Yes. Container homes are typically 30-50% cheaper than traditional construction. You save on materials (recycled containers), labor (factory-controlled production), and time (faster completion means lower financing costs). A €200,000 traditional house can be built for €100,000-€140,000 as a container home with comparable quality and finishes.

What are the payment terms?

Our standard payment terms: 30-50% deposit to commence production, 30-40% progress payment upon completion of manufacturing, and final balance due before or upon delivery and installation. We accept bank transfers, credit cards, and business checks. Financing options may be available for qualified buyers.

Delivery Questions

Where does Kembelt deliver?

Kembelt delivers throughout France, Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Italy, and other European countries. For international projects, please contact our team to discuss specific logistics and delivery options.

How long does delivery take?

Once manufacturing is complete, delivery typically takes 5-10 business days depending on your location. For France and neighboring countries, we can often deliver within 1 week. Our logistics team will provide a specific delivery date during the order process.

What site preparation is needed?

You'll need a level foundation (concrete slab, concrete blocks, or gravel pad), adequate access for delivery truck (minimum 3.5m width, 4.5m height clearance), and connection points for utilities (electricity, water, sewer). Our team can advise on specific requirements for your project.

Installation Questions

How long does installation take?

On-site installation typically takes 5-10 working days for a standard home. This includes crane offloading, container positioning and bolting, exterior finishing, interior connections, and final inspections. Larger or more complex projects may take 2-3 weeks.

Is installation included in the price?

Yes, for standard projects within our delivery zone, professional installation by our certified team is included in the quote. This includes crane offloading, assembly, connections, and quality control. For remote locations or special requirements, additional charges may apply.

Technical Questions

How well are container homes insulated?

Kembelt container homes feature high-performance insulation systems (R-value up to 6.5). We use closed-cell spray foam or rigid polyurethane panels that provide excellent thermal and acoustic insulation. Our homes are RT2020 compliant and achieve energy consumption as low as 15kWh/m²/year, compared to 100kWh for conventional homes.

Are electrical and plumbing included?

Yes, all our container homes come fully pre-wired and pre-plumbed in our factory. Electrical systems include circuit breakers, outlets, switches, and LED lighting. Plumbing includes water supply and drainage for bathrooms and kitchens. On-site connections to your utilities are included in installation.

Do I need a building permit?

Requirements vary by location. In France, structures under 20m² may not require a permit. For larger homes, you'll need a building permit. Kembelt can provide technical documentation and assistance with the permit application process. Always check with your local planning authority.
